Uasin Gishu County Grants 100% Waiver on Land Rate Penalties

The Uasin Gishu County Government has announced a 100 per cent waiver on penalties and interest accrued on outstanding land rates, offering relief to property owners across the county.

In a notice issued on Monday, April 20, Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim confirms that the waiver applies to all accumulated interest and penalties tied to unpaid land rates.

“His Excellency Dr. Jonathan Bii Chelilim… wishes to inform all property owners that a 100% waiver has been granted on all outstanding interest and penalties on land rates,” the notice states.

The waiver is, however, conditional. Property owners must clear the principal land rates within the set timeline to benefit from the offer, with the county government setting April 30 as the deadline.

“The waiver is applicable on condition that all outstanding principal land rates are fully paid, and it will remain valid until April 30,” the notice adds.

County officials are urging property owners, business people, and investors to take advantage of the opportunity, noting that settling land rate arrears will ease access to key services such as Single Business Permits.

“Property owners and business owners are therefore advised to take advantage of the waiver period… to avoid any inconvenience,” the statement notes.

The waiver is anchored in existing legal frameworks, including the Public Finance Management Act and the Rating Act, which grant county governments authority to offer such relief measures.

Uasin Gishu joins several counties that have adopted similar strategies in recent years to boost revenue collection while easing the burden on taxpayers.

Counties such as Nairobi County, Makueni County, Taita Taveta County, and Kisumu County have previously rolled out similar waivers, often recording improved compliance as landowners rush to clear their principal arrears.
