Lerte Tellah – Samburu
Maralal, Samburu County – February 27, 2025
A fresh wave of insecurity has rocked Samburu County after a commuter bus traveling along the Maralal-Baragoi road was ambushed by suspected bandits at Bukoi earlier today. Unconfirmed reports indicate that at least two people have died and nine others sustained injuries in the attack.
MP Letipila: “We Demand Security!”
Samburu North Member of Parliament Eli Letipila condemned the escalating violence, accusing the government of failing to act despite multiple attacks in recent weeks.
“It is less than a month with more than three attacks, we demand for security!” he said. He further criticized the government’s slow response, stating:
“Sisi kama community tumewajibika, lakini serikali iko reluctant.”
Samburu Women Representative also voiced her distress, particularly for children who are home on a mid-term break.
“Watoto wetu wamekuja midterm, and now this is happening!” she lamented, calling for urgent action to protect travelers, students, and local residents from these repeated attacks.
As all this unfolds, there is growing speculation among residents that the attack may have been motivated by business rivalry, with some suggesting that one particular bus operating along the same route was specifically targeted. While these claims remain unverified, the possibility of economic sabotage has fueled further concerns over the worsening insecurity in the region.
However, residents are growing increasingly frustrated, urging the government to deploy more officers, establish permanent security posts, and take long-term measures to curb banditry in the region.
This is the third attack in less than a month, raising serious concerns over safety along the Maralal-Baragoi corridor, a notorious hotspot for banditry and cattle rustling.
Authorities are expected to issue an official statement soon as pressure mounts on the government to restore security in the region.
