Since its inception in December 2020, the Kijiji Cup Foundation has been a transformative force in Maralal Ward, using sports to promote peace, unity, and community development. What started as a humble village football tournament aimed at fostering cooperation among different villages in Maralal Town has since blossomed into an impactful annual event that extends its reach beyond just football.
The Kijiji Cup Foundation is renowned for its commitment to nurturing talent and empowering the youth through sports. With every edition, the event has grown, and in 2023, the Foundation proudly welcomed the Lemisigiyio and Wamba Editions, extending its scope and deepening its impact on the community. Through these sporting activities, the foundation has effectively advocated for environmental cleanliness, peace-building, and the provision of vital support services like the Sanitary Pad Bank, which ensures that young girls in the region can access sanitary products free of charge.
This year’s edition of the Kijiji Cup, set to run from December 26th to 31st, promises to be even bigger and more diverse than ever before. In addition to the traditional football competitions, this edition will feature basketball, volleyball, and wheel racing for athletes with disabilities, ensuring inclusivity and creating a platform for all to showcase their talents. This diverse line-up exemplifies the Foundation’s commitment to empowering every member of the community, irrespective of gender, ability, or background.
The 2023 edition saw thrilling victories, with Casablanca emerging as the basketball champions and Allamano Rangers taking home the football trophy after a nail-biting penalty shootout. With the bar set high, anticipation is building for the 2024 edition. While it’s hard to predict the winners in any competitive event, teams like Casablanca, with their solid track record, and Allamano Rangers, known for their resilience under pressure, are expected to give fierce competition. However, with new talent emerging every year, there’s always room for surprises, and other teams could rise to claim the titles.
One of the most inspiring stories to emerge from the Kijiji Cup Foundation is that of Josphat Lopaga, a young man from the small village of Rangau. Josphat’s journey from playing in local tournaments to joining Dynamo Brest, an international football team in Belarus, highlights the incredible potential fostered by the Kijiji Cup’s grassroots approach. His rise serves as a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives in unlocking the potential of youth and helping them achieve their dreams on the world stage.
The Kijiji Cup Foundation remains steadfast in its mission to not only celebrate sports but also to drive meaningful social change. The funds raised through the annual event are channeled directly into scholarships for deserving students, giving them opportunities to access education and realize their potential. The Foundation’s work is a reminder of how sports can be a catalyst for broader social good, and how, through collaboration and community spirit, peace and progress can thrive.
As the Kijiji Cup Foundation gears up for its 2024 edition, it continues to be a beacon of hope, a platform for young talent, and a testament to the resilience and unity of the Maralal community. The event remains a vital part of the calendar, creating lasting impacts that extend far beyond the football field, and it is sure to inspire even greater achievements in the years to come.
