Following the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, President William Ruto has nominated Interior Cabinet Secretary Abraham Kithure Kindiki as the new Deputy President of Kenya. Kindiki’s nomination comes after the Senate upheld Gachagua’s removal on October 17, 2024, and signals a new chapter in the country’s political leadership.
Kithure Kindiki, born in 1972 in Tharaka-Nithi County, has had a distinguished career in law, academia, and politics. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Law from Moi University, a Diploma in Legal Studies from the Kenya School of Law, and furthered his education by earning a Master’s degree in International Human Rights Law and Democracy, as well as a PhD in International Law from the University of Pretoria, South Africa.
Before entering active politics, Kindiki built an impressive academic career. He served as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi, where he rose to become an Associate Dean at the School of Law. His expertise in international law saw him consulted by organizations like the United Nations, further bolstering his profile as a legal scholar and advocate of human rights.
Kindiki’s political journey took off in 2013 when he was elected Senator for Tharaka-Nithi County, a seat he held for two terms until 2022. He also held prominent positions in the Senate, including Senate Majority Leader from 2013 to 2017 and Deputy Speaker until 2020. Throughout his political career, Kindiki earned a reputation for his steadfast support of President Ruto, playing a crucial role in the 2022 elections.
In President Ruto’s administration, Kindiki was appointed as the Interior Cabinet Secretary in 2022, where he was tasked with overseeing national security matters. His performance in this role has been highly regarded, particularly in managing national emergencies and coordinating with various security agencies.
Kindiki’s nomination as Deputy President now places him in a pivotal position in the government. His appointment is not only a reward for his loyalty to President Ruto but also a strategic move aimed at consolidating political support within the Mount Kenya region, where both Gachagua and Kindiki hail from. Kindiki’s calm demeanor, legal acumen, and deep knowledge of governance are expected to aid him in navigating the complexities of his new role.
The nomination, which was announced on October 18, 2024, has now been forwarded to Parliament for vetting, in line with the Kenyan Constitution. If confirmed, Kindiki will assume office and work closely with President Ruto to implement the administration’s agenda, while also seeking to unite the country following the turmoil surrounding Gachagua’s impeachment.
