Government Orders Nationwide School Safety Audit Following Fire Incidents

In response to recent tragic fire incidents in Kenyan schools, President William Ruto has directed the Ministry of Education to conduct a nationwide safety audit of all learning institutions. This decision follows a series of school fires, including the recent blaze at Endarasha Academy, which have raised serious concerns about the safety standards in schools.

The President’s directive aims to assess the current safety protocols, emergency response plans, and infrastructure in schools to ensure that they comply with national safety regulations. “The safety of our children is a top priority, and we must take all necessary measures to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future,” President Ruto stated during a press conference.

Education stakeholders, including teachers’ unions, parents’ associations, and non-governmental organizations, have welcomed the move, calling it long overdue. Many have pointed out that several schools lack basic firefighting equipment and do not conduct regular fire drills, leaving students and staff vulnerable in emergencies. The nationwide audit is expected to be completed in the coming weeks, with recommendations for improvements to be implemented immediately
