Government to Boost Jua Kali Artisans through Formal Employment and Financing

The Kenyan government has unveiled a new initiative to empower Jua Kali artisans by linking them to formal employment opportunities and providing access to financing through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy. This initiative aims to integrate informal sector workers into the mainstream economy by validating their skills and experience, thus enabling them to secure better jobs and financial resources.

The Recognition of Prior Learning policy, introduced by the Ministry of Education, is designed to acknowledge the skills and competencies that individuals have acquired outside formal education systems. By recognizing these skills, the government hopes to create pathways for Jua Kali artisans to transition into formal employment and enhance their livelihoods.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote job creation and economic growth by harnessing the potential of the informal sector, which employs millions of Kenyans. The government has called on private sector players and financial institutions to support this initiative by offering credit facilities and employment opportunities to skilled artisans
