Man City’s Foden wins PFA Player of the Year award

Manchester City forward Phil Foden was honored with the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year award on Tuesday, following his instrumental role in City’s historic fourth consecutive Premier League title win last season.

The 24-year-old was a standout performer for Pep Guardiola’s side, contributing 19 goals and eight assists as they narrowly edged out Arsenal to clinch the title on the final day of the campaign.

Reflecting on the accolade, Foden expressed his pride and gratitude, saying, “Winning this award is incredibly special, and I’m very proud and thankful. Being recognized by your fellow professionals is everything, and I want to extend my thanks to everyone who voted for me. I also want to give a special thanks to Pep, the City coaching staff, and all my teammates who push me to improve every single day.”

Looking ahead, Foden has already set his sights on securing a fifth consecutive Premier League title, following City’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea in their opening match of the new season. “Last season was extraordinary for everyone at the Club, but now our focus is on achieving even more success this term,” he said.

In addition to the PFA award, Foden was also named the Premier League Player of the Season for 2023-24 and received the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year honor.

City’s Director of Football, Txiki Begiristain, expressed his delight at Foden’s recognition, stating, “Everyone here is thrilled to see Phil win this award. Being acknowledged by your fellow professionals in this way is incredibly special. Phil embodies everything Manchester City stands for—he is exceptionally talented but constantly seeks to improve. He is a humble individual who is immensely popular throughout the Club. We are all very proud of him.”

Foden’s teammates Erling Haaland, who won the award last year, and Rodri, along with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard, and Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins, were also shortlisted for the Player of the Year award. Meanwhile, Chelsea forward Palmer was named the men’s PFA Young Player of the Year.
