Senators have convened a closed-door session to discuss internal matters before the impeachment hearing of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi announced that media access to the chamber and gallery would be restricted, preventing any live broadcasts or media coverage of the proceedings.
“In keeping with tradition and following the planned activities for an impeachment hearing in plenary, the Senate will hold a closed preparatory session to discuss the management of the investigation,” Kingi stated.
During this pre-hearing session, the public, media, and all other parties will be required to leave the chamber and galleries, and all broadcasting from the chamber will be halted immediately.
The speaker clarified that the purpose of this preparatory session is to ensure that the hearing proceeds smoothly and adheres to the guidelines established by the County Governments Act and the Senate Standing Orders. The open session is scheduled to resume at 11 a.m.
At that time, the speaker will read out the charges against Governor Mwangaza, who will then be asked to respond to them.
Governor Mwangaza faces three main charges: gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct, and abuse of office. After the charges are presented, both the Members of County Assembly (MCAs) and the governor will be given an opportunity to make their opening statements.
The MCAs, through their legal representatives, will then present their case against the governor, detailing the allegations brought forward by the county assembly.
