Kamala Harris has touched down in Chicago to attend the Democratic National Convention (DNC), where she will officially be confirmed as the party’s presidential candidate. She arrived at O’Hare Airport aboard Air Force Two following a day of campaigning in Pennsylvania, a key swing state, alongside her running mate, Tim Walz.
On the same day, her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, held a rally in Pennsylvania. Harris is expected to join President Joe Biden on stage during his address to the convention on Monday.
Pennsylvania has been a pivotal state in recent presidential elections, with Trump winning it in 2016 and Biden securing it in 2020. A recent CBS News poll indicates that Harris and Trump are closely matched in the critical swing states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
During a speech on Sunday, Harris indirectly criticized Trump, suggesting he was a “coward” who focuses on undermining others. She told supporters, “The real measure of a leader’s strength is in who they lift up. Anyone who is about bringing others down is a coward.”
The day before, in Pennsylvania, Trump referred to Harris as a “lunatic” and boasted that he was “much better looking” than her.
Harris arrived in Chicago on Sunday in preparation for the Democratic National Convention, where delegates will formally recognize her as the nominee for the November 5 election. The convention will culminate on Thursday, with Harris delivering a primetime speech after officially accepting the party’s nomination.
Security is heightened around the event venue as tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters are expected to gather in Chicago during the four-day convention.
